Few women in the world have travelled solo more than 20 thousand kilometres on the back of a horse simply to put meaning into their life. Gitta Steffes is one of them.

"Thank you for logging into my website. Let me accompany you on a ride through the many pages that tell the tales of my various horse adventures. May you, too, be inspired to become an equestrian nomad of the road, or if you are already an experienced trekker - do it again! There is nothing more enchanting than to saddle up, pack your saddlebags and head into nature and adventure with your four-legged friends."

About Me

I was born on August 1st in Oldenburg, north Germany, the birthplace of the famous Oldenburg Warmblood horse breed. August 1st is also the universal horses’ birthday in the southern hemisphere. Despite this auspicious beginning, I had no connection with horses until I was an adult living in the United States. I bought my first horse in North Dakota, a purchase that added both a new dimension and a new direction to my life.

I worked for several years as a language teacher, however my love of horses became a greater part of my life. Eventually I made the life-changing decision to become a photographer and a writer. Thus I began my life as photo journalist mounted on the back of a horse.

My first real horse trek was a 7 month journey across Europe, from Capo Passero, Italy, to Cape North in Norway. This was followed in 1984, by an almost 6,000 km trip around the Italian Peninsula, and in 1988 by a 1,200 km horse trek across the Italian island of Sardinia.

In December 1988, enchanted by a beautifully illustrated magazine article about Australia,I decided to explore this continent further. I landed in Sydney and another love affair began as I set out  to explore this amazing continent by horse or mule-drawn buggy. These journeys took me along the entire length of the Bicentennial National Trail and across the Nullarbor Plain, as well as on a journey from Darwin to Adelaide with a brumby called Snowy.

I now call Australia home and have settled in the Snowy Mountains where endless trails, historic mountain huts, long rides and horse camps with crackling campfires have enchanted me for many years.
